How to document hail damage for an insurance claim

By Carl Browning, independent adjuster, 15+ years

Good documentation is the single most useful thing you can bring to a hail claim. Here's what to capture, safely.

1. Note the date and storm

Write down the date and time of the storm. Save weather alerts, news screenshots or photos of hail on the ground with something for scale.

2. Photograph from the ground

Don't climb on the roof. Photograph gutters, downspouts, window screens, siding, fences, vents, A/C units, vehicles and outdoor furniture. Take a wide shot first, then close-ups.

3. Look for interior signs

Check ceilings and attic areas for new stains or drips and photograph them.

4. Prevent further damage

Make reasonable temporary repairs, such as tarping, and keep every receipt. Most policies expect you to protect property from further damage.

5. Keep a log

Record every call: date, who you spoke with, claim number and what was said. Write down contractor visits too.

Never sign a contract or assignment you don't understand. Your policy and claim facts control coverage.

Keep it all in one place

The Home Insurance Claim Workbook ($12.99) is a printable organizer made for exactly this.
